Pearl S. Buck Writers Workshop on June 27

Registration is now open for the annual Pearl S. Buck Writers Workshop to be held on Wednesday , June 27, at 10 a.m. The event is open to the public, and intended for writers of all genres, all ages, all skill levels. It is being held in conjunction with Allegheny Echoes, will be led by master teacher for the Allegheny Echoes creative writing class Jim Minick, and participants in the Pearl S. Buck Workshop will be joined by the Echoes participants for the session.

Nobody quite knew what to expect from the first Pearl S. Duck Croquet Tournament last year, but it turned out to be a big success. So much so that the fundraiser will not only be repeated this year on Sunday June 24th, but will be bigger and better. Organizers have announced that a layer of team competition has been added, allowing individual players to also register as part of 4 person teams. The way matches are played won't change, but we will award a prize for the team with the best combined individual scores. Teams can represent any group--businesses, nonprofits, local government, family, church, school, club, etc.--so just come on out and represent!

There was a bit of a party atmosphere in the 8th grade classroom of Language Arts teacher Mrs. Jonese today as we held our final gathering for the Beyond Pen Pals Collaboration Project. Joining us for the event were Sue Groves, Acting Executive Director from the Pearl S. Buck Birthplace and Jolie Lewis, Vice-President of the Birthplace Foundation Board, who joined us virtually in a Google Hangout.  The students enjoyed egg rolls and fried rice from China Palace in Lewisburg, while drinking Moroccan mint tea and good old fashioned sweet iced tea from right here at home.

The Little Levels Heritage Fair Adds A Scholarship Competition to the Pearl S. Buck Student Writers' Contest

In addition to it's annual Pearl S. Buck Student Writers' Competition, The Little Levels Heritage Fair has announced a competition for a $500 college scholarship to be awarded to a Pocahontas County High School Senior.  Complete texts of the announcements are below.

The Little Levels Heritage Fair, through a generous contribution by Mr. Michael J. Porter invites students to enter the Pearl S. Buck Student Writers' Contest.

We are changing the format this year.  Allegheny Echoes will conduct the Pearl S. Buck Writer’s Workshop within their event June 24 through June 29, 2012.  One student from either a junior or senior high school class and one college student may enter and apply for a full scholarship to attend the Allegheny Echoes & Pearl S. Buck Writer’s Workshop.  Teachers and Professors may also apply.  Poet Kirk Judd will conduct the classes along with other featured writers.

You must write “SCHOLARSHIP APPLICANT” on the envelope when you mail your application.  The winner will be notified as soon as judging is completed.
